A moving check list makes your move a little easier

Moving home is extremely stressful and there are many things that you will have to remember to do well before the actual day of the move. With this in mind you need to give some thought to making a moving checklist. Ideally your check list should begin around 6 weeks before your move and the go on right up until the actual day before the move. To help you save time you can copy the check list below and then tick off the boxes when a task has been completed.
Things to consider 6 weeks before the move

  • Confirm with the removal company the actual date and time you are moving home
  • If you are taking care of the removal yourself with a hire van then hire a van and get help from family
  • If the property you live in is rented the inform your landlord of the move
  • Get in touch with your home insurance company and ensure your new home is covered from day one
  • Notify your utility companies that you are making the move and give them your new address
  • This is a good time to have a clear out of any items you do not need. The majority of people accumulate junk and when making a new start you do not want to take this with you
  • If you are having new carpets fitted in your new home now is the time to have them delivered and fitted
  • Buy all the packing materials you need to ensure your possessions arrive at your new home safely and securely

Two weeks before the removal date

  • Begin to pack any items that are classed as no essential
  • Defrost the freezer to ensure that it will be ready for the move
  • Register with new Doctors and Dentists in the area you are moving to
  • Cancel any deliveries you have such as milk and newspapers from the day before the move
  • Make arrangements with your family to look after small children and pets on the day of the move
  • Send out change of address cards to friends and family
  • Inform all relevant people of the move such as banks to change direct debits, standing orders and internet service

One week before you move home

  • Call the removal company again to check that everything is still in order for the moving date
  • Have your car serviced or check it over yourself as you do not want breakdowns on the moving day
  • Pack all items but the most essential that are needed
  • Clean the fridge and freezer ensuring that the freezer is dry before taping the door shut and wrapping it in protective materials

The day before the move

  • Take children and pets to your family to ensure they are out of the way
  • Take a look around in all corners and places of the home to ensure that nothing has been forgotten
  • Try to relax as much as possible and take a last look around the home
  • Get an early night so that you are relaxed and wide awake early
