Items That Could Be Classed As Non-allowable When Moving

When moving home you have to be aware that there are certain items that you cannot pack and put on the removal van. When you book with the removal company they should provide you with a list called a “non-allowable” list. It should state all items which they will not allow you to pack and put on their van. It is important that you follow this list as the whole move could be jeopardised if you choose to ignore it.

While some of the items listed on the non-allowable list will include items which you would expect to find, there can also be many that you would perhaps never have given any thought to such as common nail polish. Any items which have particular sentimental value to you will also be included as would food that is perishable.

On the list you will usually find a heading called “hazardous materials”. However many items on the list you might not even consider to be hazardous and will come as quite a surprise. For instance if you have any fertiliser in your garden shed and want to take this with you, you will have to take it yourself as the moving company list this as one of the hazardous materials. While of course you will be using it for your garden and plants it can be used as an explosive material as happened when it was used as one of the main components in the Oklahoma bombing in 1995. Items which the removal company will consider to be hazardous could include:

  • Aerosols
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Batteries such as AA, C and AAA e.t.c which you would use in many items
  • Bleach
  • Cleaning solvents
  • Nail polish and nail polish remover
  • Weed killer

Sentimental items which could be included on the non-allowable list might include such as:

  • Computer discs
  • DVDs
  • Photograph albums
  • Insurance policies
  • Tax records and deeds
  • Mobile phones
  • Laptop computers
  • Medicines
  • Any collections such as coins, stamps e.t.c

Perishable items which the list could contain might include:

  • Plants both indoor and outdoor
  • Any frozen foods
  • Fresh foods
  • Produce
  • Opened food products
Of course all of the items listed above are just some of the many items that you might find on a non-allowable list. You should always check with your chosen removal company well before the removal date if you are
